Why has my boiler broken down?

Most of the boiler breakdowns we are called to in Stockport come down to one of six things. This is where each one is on a typical combi boiler, and what you are likely to notice.

ABCDEF
A typical combi boiler with the front drawn open. The letters match the list.
  • A

    Low water pressure

The gauge reads below 1 bar and the boiler shuts down to protect itself. Topping up may get it going, but pressure that keeps dropping means a leak or a failed expansion vessel.

  • B

    Ignition or flame failure

The boiler tries to fire, fails and locks out, often with a fault code. Electrodes, the gas valve and the fan are the usual suspects.

  • C

    A frozen condensate pipe

In a cold snap the plastic waste pipe outside can freeze solid. The boiler gurgles, then stops with a fault code.

  • D

A failed pump or diverter valve

Hot water but no heating, or heating but no hot water, usually points to one of these two parts.

  • E

    Thermostat and control faults

Sometimes the boiler is fine and is simply not being told to come on. Flat batteries in a wireless thermostat are a classic.

  • F

    Leaks and worn seals

Drips from under the boiler, or an overflow pipe outside that keeps dripping, need attention before they damage other parts.

What to check before you call

  • Is the gas on? See whether a gas hob lights. On a prepayment meter, check the credit
  • Is the power on? Look at the switch beside the boiler and at the display
  • What does the pressure gauge say? With the heating cold it should usually read between 1 and 1.5 bar
  • Is the thermostat turned up, and is the timer on?
  • In freezing weather, is the condensate pipe outside frozen?
  • Is there a fault code on the display? Write it down. It tells us where to start

If your boiler’s instructions say you can, press reset once. If it locks out again, leave it alone and call 07497 805675.

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, call or send us a message.

My boiler has broken down. What should I do first?

Check the simple things: that the gas and electricity are on, that the pressure gauge reads about 1 to 1.5 bar, that the thermostat is asking for heat and that the timer is on. If the boiler has locked out, reset it once. If it will not restart, or it locks out again, call 07497 805675 and tell us the make of the boiler and any fault code on the display.

How much does a boiler repair cost in Stockport?

It depends on what has failed. A sensor, an electrode or a seal is a small repair. A fan, a pump or a circuit board costs more because the part does. We find the fault first, then tell you the price of the repair before we carry it out, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Should I repair or replace my boiler?

Most boiler breakdowns can be repaired, and a boiler repair is usually the cheaper answer. Boiler replacement makes more sense when the boiler keeps breaking down, when parts are obsolete or when the repair would cost a large share of the price of a new boiler. We will give you an honest view either way.

How often should I have a boiler service?

Once a year. A boiler service checks that the boiler is burning gas safely and efficiently, and catches worn parts before they fail. Most manufacturers also make a yearly boiler service a condition of the warranty.

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

Pressure that drops again after you top it up means water is leaving the system. The usual causes are a leak at a radiator valve or a pipe joint, a pressure relief valve that is letting water past, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping up again and again is not a fix, because fresh water brings in air, which rusts the radiators from the inside.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. All gas work, including boiler repair, boiler servicing and boiler installation, is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You are welcome to ask to see the Gas Safe ID card before any work starts.

Which areas around Stockport do you cover?

We cover Stockport town centre and the areas around it, including Edgeley, Heaton Moor, Reddish, Offerton, Hazel Grove, Bramhall, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Bredbury, Romiley and Marple. The coverage page has the full list. If you are not sure, call 07497 805675.

I can smell gas. Who do I call?

Not us first. Open the doors and windows, do not touch light switches or use a naked flame, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999. They will make the supply safe. Once that is done, we can find and repair the fault.
